Caring for the Patient and Families Experiencing a Terminal Illness

Haven Hospice is a program for patients and their families who are coping with a life-threatening illness. People turn to hospice care when curative treatment is no longer available or desirable. Services are personally designed to support each patient and family's unique needs, with an emphasis on offering individuals choice, dignity and respect.

Hospice care is provided by an experienced, interdisciplinary team led by a board-certified physician who supervises all medical care. Working with the patient and families to ensure the best course of treatment for patients, the team consists of:

  • Physicians with access to the latest medical treatments, advances in pain and symptom management, as well as drug therapies.
  • Registered Nurses who are specially skilled in caring for the terminally ill and are experts in symptom management.
  • Licensed social workers who address a full range of psychosocial needs from diagnosis through bereavement.
  • Clergy who support all faiths.
  • Certified Home Health Aides who assist in providing gentle personal care, such as bathing, grooming and dressing.
  • Physical, Occupational, Speech and Nutritional Therapists.
  • Trained Volunteers who provide support, companionship, and practical assistance to patients and families.

Hospice care can be provided in numerous settings. In-patient hospice care is available at JFK Medical Center in the Mary Anne Hale Pavilion. The beautiful facility features five home-like private rooms, a library, meditation room, entertainment center, patio garden, nutritional center, and children's play therapy area. Hospice care is also provided in the comfort of the patient’s residence, long-term care facilities and assisted living facilities. Haven Hospice provides care in Middlesex, Union, Somerset, and portions of Monmouth counties. Referrals are received from JFK Medical Center, surrounding hospitals, physicians’ offices, and from patients and families seeking services.

Palliative Care Consults

Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis. The Palliative Care Team offers assistance to numerous patients and families throughout JFK annually. Physicians and nurses address pain and symptom management and licensed social workers provide counseling, education and support in advance care planning, determining the wishes of patients.

If you have any questions about the Palliative Care team, please call 732-321-7769 for further information. Please note, palliative care is available to any patient with a serious illness, not just those with terminal diagnoses.
