Specially Trained Pediatric Nurses and Physicians Staff Pediatric Emergency Department

Nurse & Boy

A trip to the hospital Emergency Department can be stressful no matter at what age or the reason for the visit. That stress can be even greater for a child who doesn't know what to expect, and who can be overwhelmed and frightened by the sights and sounds of an Emergency Department that serves patients of all ages.

For that reason, JFK opened our state-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department to provide young patients with high-quality, safe and efficient care in an environment designed specifically for children and their parents.

"The child-friendly nature of our Pediatric Emergency Department is apparent the minute (a person) walks through the door," said Dr. Frank Cunningham, Medical Director of the JFK Pediatric ED. "That's because we have a separate, private entrance so children won't be exposed to adult healthcare emergencies that might be troubling to them," he said.

Once inside, everything from the calming demeanor of the physicians, nurses and other staff to the patient care areas with walls and doors for privacy combine to create a comforting atmosphere. "We offer bedside registration so that children can relax while we obtain information from their caregivers. Similarly, our rooms are equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment technology, which allows us to do a great deal for the child right there, minimizing the need for him or her to move from one area of the Emergency Department to another," said Dr. Okechukwu Anene, Chairman, Department of Pediatrics.

The Pediatric Emergency Department is able to draw on resources that include a comprehensive on-site laboratory, a radiology department for X-rays or similar imaging, and the full capabilities of JFK, which has a 30-bed inpatient pediatric unit and a five-bed Pediatric Special Care Unit.

"Our physicians, nurses, and other team members are dedicated to providing the child with a reassuring environment as well as compassionate and excellent care, but parents and caregivers can do more than anyone else to make their child's experience a positive one," Dr. Cunningham said.
