Exceptional Nurses Lead The Way To A 5-Star Rating

JFK Labor and Delivery Top 10% in the Nation

JFK Medical Center's golden anniversary year has been marked with numerous commemorative events and highlights. Most recently, the labor and delivery team was recognized for their outstanding performance in women's care with the prestigious 2017 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™ and in the top 10 percent of all hospitals by Healthgrades, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

"As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of JFK Medical Center, receiving the Healthgrades recognition demonstrates our commitment to providing compassionate, state-of-the-art care to the women in the communities we serve," said JFK Health President and CEO Raymond Fredericks. "It takes more than an investment in the physical and technological resources necessary to become a high-performing hospital; it takes a special team of people. Our team of exceptional nurses, technicians, doctors and support staff works tirelessly to create an environment that educates, supports and nurtures not only new mothers and their newborns, but also the entire family."

Alicia Carroll, Associate Director for Quality Solutions for Healthgrades, acknowledged the medical center team when presenting the award.

"We believe it is the application of your core values and quality principles that drove this success. Your commitment to excellence in providing quality and compassionate healthcare services to your diverse communities is exemplified in this award."

JFK is one of only 16 hospitals in New Jersey to receive this Healthgrades recognition, performing Better than Expected Against National Averages in both C-section and vaginal delivery complications.

For C-sections, the hospital posted a 1.5 percent rate compared to a 3.53 percent national average. For vaginal deliveries, JFK experienced a 1.96 percent rate compared to a national average of 4.69 percent.* It is these high-quality outcomes that distinguish JFK Medical Center among its peers as a top choice for parents-to-be in selecting a high-quality hospital for their delivery.

"We've always been proud of our Family Suite," affirmed Wayne Steinbeck, MD, Chairman of Obstetrics & Gynecology at JFK. "Like all of the units in our hospital, the nurses, techs and physicians that work on the Family Suite are an especially cohesive, professional team. The Healthgrades award highlights their attention to detail and patient-centered focus on the needs of the mother and baby and helps to make us a natural choice for maternity services."

For 50 years, JFK has been creating a multi-generational legacy of providing outstanding care to moms and babies. Merry Sanguino, Nurse Manager for Labor & Delivery, said, "We have a collaborative group, that is not only devoted to the patient but strives to give each one the birth experience she is anticipating."

Labor and Delivery staff nurse Linda Lordi added, "We recognize that giving birth is a momentous occasion. At JFK, mothers labor, deliver and recover in a single room with the support and love of their family and friends. Being a part of these miracles is just amazing."

Since babies arrive on their own schedule, the L&D unit staff must be ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The L&D night staff is an exceptional group according to Assistant Manager, Elizabeth Amadeo. Elizabeth praised her co-workers on their ability to not only communicate, but also think on their feet. Over the past five years in L&D, she has witnessed the way the team brainstorms to address situations during the off-hours when they don't have the luxury to consult with staff from other areas or call someone to come in to assist. "I wouldn't change my career choice – nor would I change the people I work with – for anything," Elizabeth said, "One thing is for sure. There has never been a time I have not said to myself ‘wow' after witnessing a birth."

"You are such a big part of the birth experience, and although to us it is just part of our job, we are, without even realizing it, impacting the future of not one, but two people. It's a rewarding and challenging responsibility, and one of the happiest jobs I could ever imagine having," added L&D night staff nurse, Allison McNeil.

This isn't the first time JFK has been recognized by Healthgrades. The hospital was the recipient of the Healthgrades Neurosciences Excellence Award in 2015 as well as the Stroke Care Excellence Award for the past three consecutive years, confirming the hospital's commitment to delivering the highest quality care. In addition to the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, the hospital was also recognized by Healthgrades as a five-star recipient for hysterectomy care.
