Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Staying-healthy-during-the-holidaysPlan, plan, plan. Plan ahead of time when you know you have an after-work party or a weekend social. Exercise earlier in the day to avoid any guilt of overeating and try to anticipate the foods being served so you can plan what you can fill up on and the foods to avoid. Never skip a meal in anticipation of a party or special dinner. Starving yourself sets you up for uncontrolled eating.

Keep a food diary. Be aware of everything you eat, and try your best to track it throughout the day so you know how much you can indulge throughout the event.

Throughout the holidays, only wear clothing that fits well. Elastic waistbands and loose clothing invite overeating. Stick with buttons, zippers and unforgiving fabrics. Be proud of looking your very best!

Be polite but firm when you are pressured to eat. Stand up for yourself and refuse the food pusher.

Eat slowly. Put your fork down between bites and savor every bite. Pause to reflect on what you have eaten so you can decide to proceed with more. Remember, it takes approximately 20 minutes or so for the stomach to tell the brain that it is full.

Exercise, exercise, exercise. Continuing your regular exercise program is very important throughout the holidays. This is a time when so many skip the gym because they are busy shopping and cooking, but it is even more important during this season. Fitting exercise into your busier-than-usual routine is a good stress reliever. It helps you feel and rest better.

Remember, if you overindulge, please forgive yourself. All is hardly lost with occasionally overdoing it.
