Tinnitus, or ringing in the ear(s), is sometimes a symptom of an underlying medical issue, but does not always have a direct cure. For some people, it may just be a minor inconvenience, but for others, the noise can significantly impact their quality of life. At the Center for Audiology, your doctor will sit down with you to learn how tinnitus affects you – whether it’s a hissing sound in one ear or a whooshing sound in both ears. After that, he or she will perform an in-depth hearing evaluation – plus an otoacoustic emissions test, if applicable – and move forward with a custom treatment plan.

Management Options

Treatment will vary depending on which type of tinnitus a patient is diagnosed with and how the noise impacts each patient’s day-to-day life. Some cases are the result of a treatable condition and can be corrected with surgery or medication. Other cases, however, have no known cause. If no underlying cause is detected, your audiologist may recommend one of the following management options:

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

One of the most successful tinnitus treatment options used at JFKMC is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT). Upwards of 80% of individuals who underwent TRT reported some level of improvement. Over the course of 12 to 18 months, patients wear a hearing aid-like device that produces low-level white noise. This interrupts the brain-ear pathway, preventing patients from noticing the tinnitus noise. The earpiece is coupled with educational and counseling sessions to practice tinnitus coping strategies.
