Low Dose CT

The Computer Tomography, otherwise known as a CT Scan, has revolutionized medicine as it allows physicians today to detect diseases that, in the past, could often only be found during surgery or an autopsy. Now, JFK Radiologists use state of the art Low Dose Technology (ASiR) and prudent scanning protocols to perform low-dose CT scans without compromising image quality -- while reducing the radiation dose up to 50 percent whenever possible. It provides a highly-detailed look at many different parts of the body for effective diagnosis and treatment of disease and medical conditions.

The FDA has regulations covering the safety, effectiveness and radiation control of all X-ray imaging devices, including CT. The individual risk from a necessary imaging exam is quite small when compared to the benefit of aiding accurate diagnosis or intervention. Because of concerns regarding radiation exposure, JFK has invested in Adaptive Statistical iterative Reconstruction ( ASiR™) technology to help minimize radiation dose to our patients. While it is imperative to provide the safest test possible to all our patients, it is especially important to children, women and those patients requiring repeat CT scans. This new technology allows our radiologists to make the diagnosis while using ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) radiation exposure principles.

What is a CT Scan?

A sophisticated diagnostic device, the CT uses a rotating x-ray device to create detailed, cross-sectional images of internal anatomy from different angles. A computer reconstructs these "slices" to produce three dimensional images called tomograms. A non-invasive procedure, a CT scan obtains images of body parts that cannot be detected with the use of a traditional X-ray.

What can I expect during a CT Scan?

A CT Scan is typically performed in an outpatient setting. The imaging machine resembles a large, square doughnut. The patient lies on a table, which slides into the circular opening and moves forward and backward to accurately position the patient for imaging. The CT scanner is a circular, rotating frame with an X-ray tube mounted on one side and a detector mounted on the other. With each complete rotation of the scanner, a cross-section of the body part in question is acquired. The procedure is performed by a certified radiology technician who will ask the patient to hold his/her breath for a few seconds at a time so that the scanner can collect the targeted data set. A complete scan typically takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to complete. During the process, the patient will be able to communicate with the technician via an intercom system.

When is it most appropriate to use a CT Scan for diagnosis?

A superior diagnostic tool for the brain, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, sinus and vascular imaging, CT Scans are frequently used to detect and evaluate diverse abnormalities of the body, including the brain, neck, spine, chest abdomen, pelvis, and sinuses. A CT has the ability to image a combination of soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels, making it possible to detect diseases earlier than with a regular X-ray. As such, it can obtain an accurate and earlier diagnosis, resulting in greater success of treatment of many diseases.

What should I do to prepare for the procedure?

On the day of your procedure, you may need to refrain from eating solid food for four hours prior to the appointment. However, a moderate amount of clear liquids is acceptable. There is generally no other special preparation required. You should where comfortable, loose clothing and such things as earrings, glasses, dentures, and belts should be removed so as not to compromise the image. In some cases, you may be asked to where a hospital gown. In some cases, the CT procedure may require that the patient take orally or via injection a contrast agent to enhance the images of the organs and/or blood vessels being studied. As the contrast agent contains iodine, it is important to notify the nurse or technician if you are allergic to iodine.

How safe is a CT Scan?

The contrast agents are considered safe and side effects are uncommon. The new ASiR technology provides minimal radiation exposure with exceptional image quality that is ideal for whole-body imaging and neurological imaging needs. A CT Scan is not done during a pregnancy; if you are pregnant speak with your doctor regarding alternative options for diagnosis.

The Breast Center at JFK Medical Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology for mammography and stereotactic biopsy and certified by the Food and Drug Administration. Staffed by licensed female technologists and board-certified radiologists, the Breast Center provides comprehensive screening and diagnostic services -- such as mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy -- to detect and diagnose breast cancer. Also on staff is a registered Breast Nurse Navigator who provides women with support, guidance and resources. The Breast Center accepts physician referrals as well as self- referrals from patients who meet the American Cancer Society guidelines for age and family history. Bone density testing is also offered to women and men for osteoporosis evaluation.

The JFK Breast Center now offers digital mammography -- the most technologically-sophisticated breast exam available anywhere.

Digital mammography differs from film mammography in much the same way digital cameras differ from film cameras. In digital systems, the film is replaced by detectors that convert x-rays into electrical impulses. These signals create images that can be viewed on computer screens or printed like traditional x-rays. The patient experience is made more comfortable with the use of a Mammopad, a cushion placed over the detector.

Digital Mammography: An X-ray of the breast tissue, it  is the most effective way to detect breast cancer in its earliest stage. This technology can detect breast changes long before they can be felt, giving you more choices in treatment options and a greater chance of survival. Our state-of-the-art digital Hologic mammography systems use technology that produces extremely sharp digital images.

Ultrasound: A radiation-free technique that uses sound waves. Ultrasound can help distinguish normal breast tissue from a fluid filled cyst or a solid mass that appears on a mammogram.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy: A state-of-the-art technique that uses computer imaging to allow for the precise removal of a small area of breast tissue  via a rapid sampling of the breast tissue with minimal discomfort and minimal invasion of the breast.

Ultrasound Breast Biopsy: A state-of-the-art biopsy technique that allows a rapid sampling of the breast tissue with minimal discomfort and minimal invasion of the breast, using ultrasound guidance.

Computer-Aided Detection (CAD): Utilized to assist Radiologists in the early detection of breast cancer by providing a digitized second evaluation.

Bone Density Testing: Uses a very low dose Dual Energy X-ray beam (DEXA SCAN) to measure bone mineral density and assess osteoporosis and potential bone fracture risk.

The Nurse Navigator: Designed to reduce the amount of time, anxiety and inconvenience a woman experiences from the moment she discovers a breast abnormality to diagnosis and follow-up. The nurse will serve as patient advocate and educator. She will provide the information and reassurance during the treatment decision process, identify hospital and community resources, coordinate appointments among numerous specialties, and assess the psychological sequelae of the diagnosis and treatment.

Services:

Educational materials and instruction in breast self-examination are provided free of charge. The Breast Center also offers educational outreach programs to promote breast health awareness within the community. The Breast Center has been a Susan G. Komen grant recipient for the past 8 years and has been recognized for their educational and screening programs.

About Our Services

Bone Density (Dexa Scan) - Dexa scans are the most commonly used test to measure bone density. The result of the Dexa scan can be a great help to physicians in diagnosing, treating and monitoring the treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis as well as predicting the risk of bone fracture.

Computer Tomography (CT) - Computerized Tomography scan is an imaging procedure produced by an x-ray tube that rotates in a circle around the patient, making many pictures as it rotates. The multiple x-ray pictures are reconstructed by a computer in cross-sectional images, permitting doctors to examine “slices” through different organs. Learn more.

X-ray - Diagnostic X-ray is the general term used for a group of examinations that are produced by the transmission of X-rays through a patient to a capture device then converted into an image for diagnosis. Diagnostic radiology exams are commonly requested by physicians to evaluate the lungs, heart and skeleton. Learn more.

Interventional Radiology - An area of specialty within the field of radiology that uses various radiological techniques (such as X-ray, computer tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and ultrasounds) to place wires, tubes, or other instruments inside a patient to diagnose and treat an array of conditions. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - MRI uses magnetic signals to create images of the human body. Like all imaging techniques, an MRI creates images based on differences between types of tissues. MRI scan are often used to study nerves, muscles, ligaments, bones, and other tissues in the body; the details of which are quite incredible. Learn more.

Mammography - A mammogram is an X-ray examination of the breast. Mammography is performed to detect abnormalities or to provide a baseline reference for later comparison. Learn more.

Nuclear Medicine - Nuclear medicine is an imaging specialty that involves the introduction of a radioisotope into the body through intravenous injection. The isotope is taken up in different amounts by different organs and through scanning the patient's body, information is sent to computers which reconstruct the images for diagnosis. The radioisotope has a short half-life and thus decays completely before its radioactivity can cause any damage to the patient's body.

PET CT - A PET CT scan (positron emission tomography) is a unique type of imaging procedure that provides both information related to organs and tissues inside the body as well as how they function. The PET CT scan measures emissions from positron-emitting molecules in the body. Because many useful, common elements have positron emitting forms (carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen), valuable functional information can be obtained. PET CT scans produce 3-D images, and are often used to compliment rather than replace the information obtained from standard CT or MRI scans. Learn more.

Ultrasound - Ultrasound, also known as sonography, or ultrasonography, is a diagnostic procedure that transmits high-frequency sound waves, inaudible to the human ear, through body tissues.
